As an Orton-Gillingham trained reading specialist, I have learned lots of tips and strategies that help children maximize their learning potential.

One of my favorite things about working with students and families is being able to share those tips with parents!

Now that our learning space is large enough to meet with groups, I am so excited to be able to offer parent-friendly tips and support that will help you help your child learn in the most effective way possible.

It's like having a reading specialist in your back pocket!

In honor of Dyslexia Awareness month, I will be offering two FREE parent workshops with tips, strategies, and advice for parents who are helping a child learn with Dyslexia (or who may have a suspected language-related learning challenge).

Homeschooling with Dyslexia

This workshop will focus on:
  • What do children with Dyslexia need?
  • How can you best support your child in their learning?
  • What should you look for in learning materials?
  • What resources are out there?
  • Answering any questions YOU have!

"Homeschooling with Dyslexia" is NOT an informational training on dyslexia itself, but rather on strategies and things to think about when planning your lessons and support for your child's homeschooling. This workshop focuses on supporting parents, providing a "lens" through which you could use when deciding what to strategies/lessons/methods to try, as well as giving homeschooling parents a safe place and community to ask questions. You do NOT have to feel alone in this journey, and in fact, homeschooling with Dyslexia can be FUN! :-)

Please EMAIL ME at literacyjourneys@gmail.com to register. Registration is required so I know how many to expect. YOU WILL GET A CONFIRMATION EMAIL FROM ME, so if you don't hear back, please try and reach out again. :-)

Thanks!

Brain Friendly Learning: Multisensory Ways to Make Learning "Stick"

Tentative Date*: Postponed  Cost: $15/person (plus $5 suggested donation for materials)
Have you ever wondered if there is something more you could be doing to help your child really retain what they are learning? Are there simple things you could be doing to help your child learn in the way that is best for them?

As someone who works with not only neurotypical learners, but also many students with diagnosed learning disabilities, I have to make sure to approach all learning opportunities in a way that "lights up" different areas of the brain, and ensure that children and teens are fully engaged and using brain-friendly strategies to make learning "stick".

Believe it or not, you don't have to be an expert to use these strategies, too!

Once I learned how to make learning more brain-friendly, I couldn't go back to the way I was doing things before. These are simple, smart strategies that will benefit anyone learning, not only students with a possible learning challenge. But it is critical for those learners who need more help. Plus, they're fun! While we will focus on literacy, we can talk about how these strategies could be used with other subjects as well.

This workshop will be hands-on and "make n' take", so you will be able to walk away and start using your favorite strategies right away!

Past Scheduled Workshops...

Navigating School with Dyslexia

For parents of children in public, private, or charter schools, this workshop will give you an overview of how children with Dyslexia (and other language based learning challenges) learn best, what you can look for in classroom instruction that meets those needs, and how you can support your child at home.

This workshop will focus on:
  • What do children with Dyslexia need? What can you be looking for in your child's instruction at school?
  • How can you best support your child in their learning, especially with homework?
  • If the traditional curriculum is a little too challenging, what are some things you can do to help make learning easier for your child?
  • What conversations could you be having with your child's teachers to ensure your child has access to appropriate support?
  • What resources are out there? What can you do if you feel your child needs more help outside of school?
  • Answering any questions YOU have!

"Navigating School with Dyslexia" is NOT an informational training on dyslexia itself, but rather what you can be "looking for" in your child's learning experiences to understand if they are appropriate for your child's needs. You will be empowered with some questions you can be asking and examples of what are helpful interventions you can hope to see in school. Sometimes, as much as your child's teacher is trying to help, you may need additional professional support outside of school as well, and we can talk about various ways to get that support.
