Fall 2018 Classes

Picture
Classes will begin the week of September 17 and will end December 14. This is a 12 week semester with a week off for Thanksgiving. Please scroll to the bottom to see where classes will be located. I am so excited to meet your family of learners!

If you have any questions about payment schedules, missed classes and more, please download the Handbook below (will be downloaded soon). And of course, if you still have questions, email me at literacyjourneys@gmail.com. Thanks!

Please note: Since we only get to meet once a week, it is important that students be able to participate in a group learning environment so we can make the most of our learning time together. Of course, I don't expect kids to be perfect! :-) But a general ability to participate in group lessons and work on tasks independently in class will ensure I can help make sure everyone gets the support that they need. If your child needs more personalized attention, let's talk and see if private tutoring may be a better fit.
Registration
Registration is secured through payment for the class in full or making the deposit with the materials fees. You will hear from me personally once your payment is received. :-) If you need to request to make alternate arrangements to secure your space, please email me at literacyjourneys@gmail.com.
Pay-in-Full Bonus: If you pay for the semester in full, you will receive a FREE private tutoring session. You can redeem this for your child who is enrolled in the class, a sibling, or gift it to someone. Email Jill at literacyjourneys@gmail.com if you would like to pay in full.

HOME LEARNING: There will be assignments to work on between classes. Many weeks it will simply be to complete/continue the writing that was started in class. There will not be grades, but rather feedback for growth.
Writing Foundations  (upper elementary/tweens)
Just like a house needs a strong foundation to be strong, so does our writing! Writing Foundations is an academic writing class for tweens who may still need a little bit of help making their foundation strong. The main goal of this class is to go from single paragraph to 3 paragraph essay with skill and confidence!

This 90 minute class will include:
  • weekly "tune ups" to work on sentence structure, grammar, and more to master the "basics"
  • hands-on instruction in how to build stronger sentences to make our writing more interesting (compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences, as well as other ways to add variety)
  • basic paragraph structure practice (strong introductions and conclusions, transitions if there is enough time)
  • types of paragraphs for different purposes (descriptive, process, persuasive, etc.)
  • using lists to plan paragraphs and essays
  • basic outlines to make writing easier
  • 2 paragraph, then 3 paragraph essays on various topics (how to plan the content, how to organize the information, and how to make multiple paragraphs flow and "work together")
Everyone learns at their own pace! This group is ideal for students who maybe started writing a little later, and now are ready to "connect the dots". This class will be a good fit if your child can write multiple sentences, but may not be that organized with it. This class would not be a good fit if your child is already writing multiparagraph essays/reports with ease (it would be too easy), or if your child is still in the earlier stages and takes considerable time and effort to write a few sentences (we may move too fast).

Break-the-Code Boot Camp
Transform how your child reads! If your child gets "stuck" trying to figure out words they don't know, then "sounding it out" just isn't cutting it! Break-the-Code Boot Camp's games and strategies will teach them how to master word attack skills.

This 6 month program is so special it has it's own website! You can download the flyer below or go straight to the Boot Camp page. I can't wait to see you over there!
