Fall 2017 Classes

Picture
Classes will begin after Labor Day. The last week of classes will be May 14-18, with the following week being a "make up" week due to an unplanned schedule change, such as a snow day.

Make sure to go to the home page and sign up for updates so you will know if additional classes are added. If there is a particular class you'd like to see offered, let me know! :)
You will receive the Fall 2017 Handbook before classes begin.  Schedule may change if needed.

Registration
I use an equal payment system. The total number of classes for the semester/year (minus holidays) will be divided by the number of months, giving you the same payment due on the 1st of every month. Registration is secured through making your first payment. (Your next payment will not be due until October 1st.) You will hear from me personally once your payment is received. :-) If you need to request to make alternate arrangements to secure your child's registration, please email me at literacyjourneys@gmail.com.

Word Wizards Spelling-Level 1
(Level 2 will continue at this same time in January)

The Word Wizards series was created to help your child move from phonetic "sound it out" spelling to more strategic spelling. The truth is...I love spelling! I love knowing all of the "tricks" that no one else seems to know. :) I'll bet your child would love this feeling, too!
These classes are perfect for your child if they are consistent in using the correct sounds to spell phonetically predictable words, but they get "stuck" with letter patterns that don't perfectly match the letters used to spell the word.

For example, they may wonder things like...
  • When you add "ing", why do you "double" the "n" in running, but not the "k" in walking or sneaking?
  • How do I know which spelling to use when all of these words have the long "a" sound in them?
        * acorn, stain, delay, lake, weigh, vein, great, plate *
  • What is up with all these different ways to spell vowel sounds anyways?
  • Why do I use the same vowel for kiss and kind when the /i/ sounds totally different?
  • If I hear the /k/ sound at the end of a word, do I use k...ck...or ic?
  • And this is just the TIP of the iceberg! (Don't you have a headache just thinking about it?)  Your child will be given the tools to "crack the code" of those words that seem like they don't follow any of the rules... I know the "secrets", and I'll make sure your child does, too!

Skills covered include:
  • using syllable structure to spell multisyllable words (the syllables themselves and the combinations of syllables most commonly found in words)
  • strategies for segmenting sounds so they don't omit letters in their words
  • predictable spelling pattern rules such as using double consonants, ck, dge, and tch in single syllable words
  • y as a vowel
  • r-controlled vowels- basic
  • strategies for segmenting sounds so they don't omit letters in their words
  • common non-phonetic words and strategies for how to practice them (often referred to as "sight words", these are the words that cannot be sounded out)

As soon as this group is ready to move onto Word Wizard Level 2, which covers more complex spelling skills, we will learn:
  • multiple spellings of vowel sounds based on frequency and position in words ( this is a very in-depth skill because most vowel sounds can be spelled 7 or 8 ways!)
  • vowel diphthongs such as au, aw, oi, oy, etc.
  • spelling changes to base words when suffixes are added
  • continued learning of non-phonetic words
  • r-controlled vowel patterns-advanced

We will cover as much as possible by the end of Word Wizards Level 2, but it will be flexible based on the needs of the group and how quickly we are able to move on. :-)

Intro to Academic Writing
(mixed ages, usually 5th-7th grade)

This introduction level class will build foundation skills and understanding about what "academic writing" looks like. We will focus as much as we can in our time frame, prioritizing the needs of the group, to include these options:
  • basic paragraph structure and a basic 5 paragraph essay structure
  • writing a summary
  • informational pieces & beginning research skills, citing sources, etc.
  • argumentative writing
  • compare/contrast writing
  • outlines
  • basic presentation skills

Your child will receive resources and templates that will help them in future classes they may take where academic writing may be a part of their learning.

This is a "combo" class with a built in word study portion of the class as well. Vocabulary workbooks will cover basic morphology (Greek and Latin roots) using the Vocabulary from Classical Roots series.

Secret Circle of Scribes (teens)

This group is pure magic...there will be no handbook or writing guide to follow...this group is completely inspired by the WRITERS in the group.

It's not for everybody. This is an exclusive group for kids who enjoy writing and want to be around other authors like themselves. Our goal will be to either work towards publishing solo works or a group collection through Amazon and local bookstores.

Postponed Classes
The classes below need to be postponed due to scheduling conflicts. If you are interested in one of them, please email me at literacyjourneys@gmail.com. If we have enough families interested (5-6), then I will find a time to meet that works for the group!

Break-the-Code Boot Camp
(mixed ages, usually mid-upper elementary)

Transform how your child reads! If your child gets "stuck" trying to figure out words they don't know, then "sounding it out" just isn't cutting it! Break-the-Code Boot Camp's games and strategies will teach them how to master word attack skills. (These decoding strategies are the same that I teach in my Orton-Gillingham tutoring sessions. However, this is not a replacement of individual O-G tutoring if that is what your child needs. This is a great companion to tutoring or a homeschool curriculum.)

This program is so special it has it's own website! You can go straight to the Boot Camp page. I can't wait to see you over there!

Writing for Academics
(high schoolers and motivated middle schoolers)

This class was created to fill the need for a year-long English composition class. Using 9-10th grade standards in the areas of argumentative and expository writing, this class will help high schoolers (and motivated middle schoolers who like a challenge) hone their skills in the field of academic writing and presentation skills. Please download the course overview below to learn more, and make sure to see the note at the end about books required for this class.
