Previous Class Descriptions

Tuition- $15/class One Time Materials Fee- $15

Location- Blue Mountain Child and Adolescent Center
Secret Circle of Scribes (pre-teen and teens)

This group is unlike any other writing group I've ever led...there will be no handbook or writing guide to follow...this group is completely inspired by the WRITERS in the group.

It's not for everybody. This is an exclusive group for kids who enjoy writing and want to be around other authors like themselves.

"Break-the-Code" Boot Camp
(elementary age)

Yours truly at the Summer Camp Expo!

Tuition- $20/class (includes Smarty Pants Support Kit)
One Time Materials Fee- $15
Location: Blue Mountain Child and Adolescent Center
This class is special enough to get its own web page! Even though it says "boot camp", don't be nervous... it will be tons of fun, with lots of learning! "Break-the-Code" Boot Camp is for kids who struggle with decoding (figuring out unknown words)...and "sounding it out" just isn't cutting it! Often they are at a place where they want to read books that are higher than their skill level, so it can be frustrating. They don't want to read "baby" books!

I will be using the best techniques around to help your child learn to read hundreds, if not thousands, of words...and forever change how they read!

Writing for Academics from the "On the College Track" Series  (teens)

"On the College Track" series is for middle school and early high school students who may take college classes in the next few years and want a strong foundation built! We are going to take the mystery out of
"What will they expect from me???

This class is the "foundations" class. Your child may or may not have written like this before. However, it also will go in-depth enough if your child has written basic papers. If your child needs to be more challenged, I will make sure it happens! It would be very helpful, though not required, to bring a lap top for typing.

So if we need to "go back" and cover skills, or move more quickly, I will adjust to make sure the students in this class have the perfect fit. Contact me if you have any questions, or just want to chat to make sure this would be appropriate for your child.

Writing with Technology
(multi-age)

Class POSTPONED...will likely be held as a "Learning Immersion" Class- 3 Fridays in a row from 9:00-12:00

"Writing with Technology" will explore the world of writing blogs and webpages to share your passions with the world! This is fantastic for kids who already have a lot to say and are looking for a way to share their ideas in a unique way, as well as kids who could be more motivated by writing through technology, rather than pencil and paper. Sometimes handwriting and spelling worries can cause kids to just want to shut out writing completely! Writing takes a whole new twist when kids are not just thinking of the message they want to share, but also get to dive into the visual appeal of their work...pictures, fonts, videos...creativity and interest just thrive!

The first few weeks will be spent exploring and learning the basics of two online platforms: one made for kids, with super simple ways to use it (and kid-friendly graphics), and one that is a little more "professional"...great for kids who want to stick with it long after they are done the class. In fact...I use it!

Tuition- $20/class

Location- Blue Mountain Child and Adolescent Center, 7 Yorkshire St., Suite C2 (next to intersection of Biltmore and I-40 ramps)

*Your child will need to bring a lap top or an iPad. Unfortunately, I am unable to provide these. I will have one lap top I bring with me, so contact me if this is the only concern you have about signing up. If only one student needs it, they can use mine.  :-)

Word Wizards Spelling Series- Levels 1 and 3
(elementary age)

Classes POSTPONED until Spring 2016

The Word Wizards series was created to help your child move from phonetic "sound it out" spelling to more strategic spelling. The truth is...I love spelling! I love knowing all of the "tricks" that no one else seems to know. :) I'll bet your child would love this feeling, too! These classes are perfect for your child if they are consistent in using the correct sounds to spell words, but they get "stuck" with letter patterns that don't perfectly match the letters used to spell the word. For example, when spelling, they may wonder:
Picture
  • When you add "ing", why do you "double" the "n" in running, but not the "k" in walking or sneaking?
  • How do I know which spelling to use when all of these words have the long "a" sound in them?
acorn, stain, delay, lake, weigh, vein, great, plate
  • When I hear the /j/ sound at the end of a word, why is it sometimes spelled ge and sometimes spelled dge?
  • What is up with all these different ways to spell vowel sounds?
  • Why do I use the same vowel for kiss and kind when the /i/ sounds totally different?
  • If I hear the /k/ sound at the end of a word, do I use k...ck...or ic?
  • And this is just the TIP of the iceberg! (Don't you have a headache just thinking about it?)
Your child will be given the tools to "crack the code" of those words that seem like they don't follow any of the rules...
I know the secret, and I'll make sure your child does, too! Use The Spelling Quiz Wizard tool to determine which Word Wizards level is right for your child.
